Media at the EMS Annual Meeting

The EMS events bring together some 600 members of the meteorological, climate, and related communities in Europe and beyond: from national weather and hydrological services, private service providers, academia and educational institutions, the media, and international organisations. These events serve as an annual forum, fostering cross-fertilization and exchange.

The EMS Annual Meeting: European Conference for Applied Meteorology and Climatology 2018 will be held from 3 to 7 September 2018 at Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary.

The theme of the EMS2018 is Weather and climate: global change and local hazards.

The challenges for meteorology are growing. Citizens, decision-makers, indeed all of society require information on the consequences of our changing climate, and in particular on weather and climate hazards that seem to occur more frequently and to have a significant impact on humans, nature, and infrastructure. The essential role of meteorology since the start of operations remains unchanged – the provision of reliable forecasts and trustworthy warnings to society.

However, in the 21st century impact predictions and long-term projections of climate change are also needed to support national strategic decisions aimed at saving lives and reducing costs of natural hazards. All of these challenges place increasing responsibility on scientists and forecasters, as well as on meteorological companies, institutions, and organisations: the whole "weather and climate enterprise". There are new opportunities emerging to develop this partnership further that will enable the whole enterprise to grow and produce more accurate and reliable weather forecasts and impact predictions.

These challenges and opportunities will be discussed in some 50 sessions organised in three Programme Streams, highlighted in Plenary keynotes and Townhall meetings. Some 800 abstracts have been submitted; the final programme will become available on 18 June 2018.

Media registration (deadline 18 August 2018)

A business card must be presented. Freelance science writers must present a current membership card from EUSJA, NASW, NCSWA, CSWA, ISWA or SEJ or evidence of a by-lined science story published in 2017 or 2018.
